Reducen la intensidad de la luz que llega al sensor; pero afectando por igual a todo el espectro. ¿Para qué puede interesarnos reducir la intensidad de la luz que llega a nuestro sensor y; por tanto; el uso de este tipo de accesorios? Pues para aquellas situaciones en las que la luz es excesiva. Este exceso de luz puede querer mitigarse; por ejemplo; en las siguientes situaciones: Escenas en las que deseamos emplear un tiempo de exposición más prolongado; por ejemplo; para lograr el conocido efecto seda en el agua. Situaciones en las que queremos utilizar una apertura mayor para; de este modo; reducir la profundidad de campo y lograr desenfocar el fondo. A plena luz del día; puede resultar difícil utilizar grandes aperturas (sobreexpondríamos la toma); salvo que utilicemos un filtro de este tipo para reducir la luz que llega al sensor. Paisajes en los que la elevada luminosidad del cielo hace que tengamos que elegir entre exponer adecuadamente el cielo o el resto del paisaje; salvo que podamos reducir a través de uno de estos filtros la intensidad lumínica del cielo.
